Leaning back too much while throwing a low kick? (kickboxing)?

I've been doing some casual sparring with my buddy lately and he said that he noticed my upper body was leaning back a lot while I threw low kicks. I didn't even notice that I was but now that I've been watching myself, I DO lean back a lot while throwing the low kick. When I was taking lessons a few years ago nobody ever mentioned that to me, so I assumed there wasn't a problem. I had to quit because of financial reasons and I've been doing my own thing ever since.

How much leaning back should a person do while throwing a proper low kick? Should I try to keep my body more upright while throwing? I'm leaning back so far right now that if I land the kick his counter jab can't reach me. My balance seems fine and he says there's been no problem with my kick's power. Am I doing it wrong?
I should mention that I'm doing American-style kickboxing, not MT.

Well first just let me say in TMA there is an old concept called "standing on your kick". It means don't lean and when you do you are more unstable and more easily pushed or forced off balance and you also tend to lose power in your kicks and make less solid contact.

That being said don't lean at all for low kicks! Your flexibility should be enough to do them without leaning at least and also you will have better control over your balance and it will take less time then to set your foot down and follow up with a hand combination or another kick, or to move.

Try this simple experiment with a heavy bag. Lean like you are and hit the bag with your kicks as well as following up afterwords with something like a hand combination. Then hit the bag again with the same kicks for a while and get used to the difference in balance when not leaning. Once you are used to that difference then see which way you can hit that bag harder and better as well as how much quicker after you kick you can then follow up with something like a hand combination.
