Flexibility is defined as the range of motion of a given joint. It is often associated with muscular flexibility, the extent to which range of motion is limited by muscles and tendons surrounding the joint. The freedom of motion allowed by the ligaments connecting the bones of joints influences flexibility. Flexibility affects both health and fitness.
Risk of joint and muscle injury is magnified by inflexibility. Lower-back inflexibility, which relates to low-back pain and injury, is a common example. Athletes need to move with fluidity in motions specific to their individual sports. Limitations to movement in sports affect both performance and musculoskeletal health. People do strength testing to gauge their strength. Information taken from the test of strength will determine where you need improvement. When they know what area they need to improve upon they can research the appropriate exercises to do to strengthen that area. There is no single test of flexibility that can determine the range of motion in other joints. Every joint needs a special test that will individually assess it. You want to make sure your test targets the range of motion of the shoulder, hip, and low-back.
Your trunk flexion can be measure by the sit-and-reach test. You can do the cobra stretch where you lie face down on the ground with your hands in push up position; from there you push up your torso leaving your hips glued to the ground. To test the range of your hip flexibility, attempt to arch your back. Shoulder flexibility is tested by straigtening your right arm up, bending your elbow so your hand rests between your shoulder blades with your palm down. It is suggested that you reach back with your left arm while your palm faces up. From that position you will attempt to touch hands. Do the same thing to the other arm because it is common for one shoulder to be more flexible than the other.
