Fitting Skirting Boards

We at Funky wood get asked the best way to fit skirting boards on a regular basis but people seem to seem worried when I let them know (don't be!). In this explanation I will add pictures to make it a little easier and use as many lay man terms as i possibly can because I know all people are not joiners out generally there.

Before fitting any skirting board you have to first order your skirting board  weather it be Walnut skirting boards, Walnut skirting boards, Ash or Pine with enough wastage. I have written another article concerning this (walnut skirting) yet let’s just say you will need 10-15% waste (hardwoods) meaning you'll need that much more then you certainly need, this will cover you for those bits at the conclusion and save you piecing up mismatched components of wood with grains, knots etc which will not be very nice to think about especially in a modest room. When you have got this it’s time to do timber selection you've got bought oak skirting and also you noticed it has many colour differential in this lengths, it would be good to maintain similar shades together in numerous rooms or keep it together in a room where it changes only one time.

OK! we are nearly on the point of start fitting the skirting board, the only thing left to complete is look at your timber and select what lengths could head out where once this done its time get rolling.

I was taught by a classic guy who was quite strict and so i will tell you what he taught me. The first thing you should do is stand in the main doorway or the only doorway in most rooms, looking across at the wall looking at you. This is your beginning point as this is where a lot of people enter a room it require all the scribes hidden as people enter the room. Start with your first piece for the back wall or this wall opposite as this can make it harder to see the particular scribed joints.

If you don't understand what a scribe is I will allow you to know.... you are cutting a profile on a end of a piece of timber to match any profile of timber you intend to push it too. If you use a coping saw you are able to cut the profile out easily when you should do some curved work. A tip that may also help, if you mitre the piece of skirting board use any jigsaw to cut along the mitre cut. The mitred cut will give you a true curve at the top of skirting board. It’s a cheat really and you must careful but it’s sometimes better to cut to a line then not have one at all.

So, just to recap, the first skirting board length you've put in is simply a straight length with absolutely no cuts. It has to fit tight relating to the walls. If you find the idea hard to measure the duration of the wall (sometimes with the tape measure doesn’t fit in right at the end) measure from one of many wall and bring this tape measure across in addition to mark the wall 100-200mm journey end (remember that will distance) then evaluate back. Add the two together therefore you get the distance for the mm. This should give you a true reading of the length of skirting board you need in the first place.

So you have placed your first amount of skirting board, do not fix it constantly in place just yet, keep it loose. Things always happen and its best to keep your alternatives open till you include cut everything. The idea is to start opposed to this of the room and work towards you back to the threshold.

Once the first piece of skirting board is available, work around the room till you might have reached the door. As long as anyone haven’t fixed anything in you can even examine that it all calculates fine then fit the actual  skirtingboards in properly.

I use a volume of different fixing methods. I will list below-

Use Gripfill, Pinkgrip etc. If you use this process it needs fixing in place with a nail firearm. If it’s a tough piece or you don’t have a very nail gun you should nail a small wooden pads on to the ground then use small of wood to defend the face of the actual skirting board (knight). Use another piece involving wood and nail this towards the pad and hammer down to the face of your soldier to push the  skirting board against the wall and nail constantly in place.

Another method is in order to drill and plug. Only use a very good plug cutter and lineage plugs. There is a service provider of plugs in strips of 4 on ebay (there're the cheapest and the best) Begin using these one’s which I would highly recommend you'll need a 12mm pilot cutter. Glue the plugs in and leave instantly. The next day use a sharp chisel and remove layers of the stopper around 1/5 mm at a time. It is important to ensure you have the grain going identical way as the skirting table (horizontal).

This should get anyone started with fitting  skirting boards appropriately.
