If you want to improve your boxing skills by training on punch bags, you need to follow certain steps. You should start with a light warm up instead of hitting the punch bag at first. Once you are done with the warm ups, it's time to hit the bag.
You have to circle the bag from the right and for every one or two steps that you take, feed a jab against the bag. You have to do this for two rounds of 3 minutes and then take rest for one minute.
Next, you have to repeat the same drill but have to substitute the jab with a cross and then a jab and a cross combo. Finish the footwork drill with a jab-cross-hook combo.
After footwork drill, it is the time for speed drills. You need to stand at 2-3 feet distance from your punching bag. Now, explode a jab followed by a clearance. This should be done for five times.
In repeat drill, the jab should be substituted by one-two combo and should be done five lunges. Again, repeat the speed drill with a hook punch as a substitute for one-two combo.
Follow up the speed drills with strength and stamina drills. In a strength drillboxing practice with the punch bag, you have to stand at a distance of one-two feet from the bag.
Then explode with a cross punch against the bag. Every time you hit the bag, you have to make it still before the next punch. In strength drills, the punch should be delivered with as much momentum and weight as is possible for you. Repeat this punch for ten times.
The final step is of stamina drill. Here, you have to stand at the same distance like the strength drill from the punch bag. Now explode against the bag with continuous jab punches.
This should be done for five rounds in two minutes, with a one minute break after each round. You can then follow it up with cross punches instead of jab punches. Same round numbers and timing should be maintained. A stamina drill should end with one-two punches substituting the cross punches.
This is the total schedule for practicing boxing with punch bag. Once your session is over, you should allow your body to cool down and recover. Slowly stretch your back, shoulder, triceps and abdominal muscles to aid the speed recovery and minimize the soreness which may crop up as the after effect of the training.
